All of these sources identify the patterns in data created by voter surveys that force respondents to label themselves either "liberal" or "conservative". The patterns are real but totally meaningless because (unbeknownst to the writers and pundits?) these labels have no consistent meaning whatsoever.

If you think there is a "genuine debate about the proper scope of the federal government" and if you think "conservatives" believe in small government, then the emergency injunction issued by the court on behalf of Billy Graham College is logically impossible. It simply can't be true that the most principled of principled small government advocates just said that they have the power--contrary to the clear language of Congress--to order the federal government to provide or "facilitate" the provision of contraception to college employees.
As it turns out, not only is there more than one way to make a decision, it turns out that economics is a field particularly ill-suited to economic style rational decision making!!
The real challenge facing progressives today is not a public disappointed with the ACA, the real challenge comes from the ongoing efforts of that cadre of grifters and psychopaths, the leaders of what others have labeled ["movement conservatism"][3], what is more accurately called "Reaganism".
The great triumph of Reaganism is not convincing Americans that given the choice between meaningless suffering and accepting help from the government, the American thing to do is to go on suffering. No one believes that! What Reagan did was convince Americans that government was, by its very nature, incapable of helping people in a fair and cost effective way. Also, he pointed out, it frequently helps black people.
